De-Cluttering Before Packing to Move

By Brian Patterson

When you move you have to decide what household things you need to take with you and what to discard. The process is called de-cluttering, which is an important aspect to consider when you move. Having visited the new house before hand you will be able to identify the things that you will need there and what things will fit.

Before de-cluttering you need to take a look at the household things that you need at the new home; and separate them. Those that you don't need have to be either sold off or given off as a charity. The advantage of this exercise is that it will bring down the cost of your transportation. A house with an average four persons will require a seven ton van to move if de-cluttering has been done. And if de-cluttering has not been done then the same household will net twice that capacity.

De-cluttering is not a regular everyday activity; as a result things go on accumulating in a house, many of them becoming an object of sentiment. Getting rid of these sentimental things are very hard to discard. But you will have to make every effort to get rid of them as they have no temporal value. It so happens that this de-cluttering is the only 'spring cleaning' that takes place in a household in a lifetime. But if you go through the emotional baggage you will see many things that you will find ridiculous, that is, if you see them from a practical point of view.

Things that you don't need can be donated or sold off. You can consider donating old books, toys, magazines, or clothes or any other things that are in good condition to a local charity... Or you can sell the stuff off through a yard sale, or a garage sale. You can auction them through a website like eBay or through your own website. Getting rid of emotionally attached things frees you mind.
